A 21-page Transcription Booklet in pdf form, by Mike Henebry (ASCAP) on the tools, tips and methods for transcribing anything from solos to Big Band recordings.

The word “transcribing” usually means one of two things in music. It can mean to change music from one kind of instrumentation to another (e.g., symphony orchestra to concert band). Or, it can mean to change music from one format to another (e.g., from recorded sound to written notation). We are dealing, of course, with the latter here. These kinds of transcriptions are also called “Record Copies” or “Takedowns.”

Primarily, my focus is transcribing for Big Bands. But, you can apply the basic ideas here to guitar licks, classical music, film scores, or any kind of recorded music.

I am one of the most (maybe “the” most) prolific transcribers of big band music and Dixieland in the world. So, I have a lot of experience. I have discovered many tips, tricks, pitfalls, shortcuts and stratagems that can save you a lot of time. In the booklet, I explain many tips on transcribing. This information should also help you to attain better results.

These tips include things like what kind of equipment you should consider and some basic acoustics that may be relevant. I also explain various ways to transcribe. I am also very accessible. So, please ask if you don’t understand something or need more advice. I am always willing to help.

When you are ready, please go to “checkout.” Upon checkout, you can either pay with a credit card or use PayPal (or use PayPal to create a PayPal account or pay with a Credit card or a Debit card there). Either way, you will be provided a download link, on the spot, that never expires.
